Falcon Pack practise tent pitching

On Tuesday Falcon Pack practised tent pitching in readiness for their forthcoming camp at Thriftwood.
Each Six had a Force Ten tent and were shown how to pitch and strike the tent and how to fold it up back into the bag!
After their hard work, the Cubs enjoyed a drink and biscuit in the garden before the end of the evening.

St.George's Day Parade 2013

Many thanks to all those who made the effort to turn out so smartly for the parade today. It is much appreciated and your attendance will help us with next years Peter Geer numbers. Speaking of which, we came third this year. That means, on a percentage basis, we have had the third highest number of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts attend District events this year!

I hope you all took pride in the community work you carried out, enjoyed the services you attended and enjoyed the parade through the High Street. This is the one event each year where all Scout Groups and Guide/Brownie/Rainbow units expect full attendence and the rest of the town turns out to celebrate St. George (the patron saint of Scouting) and our young people.

More photos are on the Group website and others will be added over the next few days.

Oh yes, Happy Birthday Akela (Herons). Thank you for sharing your birthday with us.

Sunday 21st April

This weekend many involved Scouting will be either holding their own St.George’s Day celebrations or they will be joining in with bigger events organised by their home towns.

Here in Ware, we join together with other uniformed organisations to celebrate the fact St.George is the patron saint of Scouting. Members of our Group will be involved in the parade through the High street, will take part in specially held church services, will help support  our community by performing a variety of services such as litter picking, gardening, painting town benches, maintenance and tidying up at the skate park.

Just like the Scout Association, St. George is a supporter of people from all backgrounds, nationalities and walks of life. As well as England he is the patron Saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Germany and Greece; he also represents, archers, soldiers, farmers, those suffering from leprosy, several other illnesses and many other towns and jobs.

The Scout Association recently asked him, "why Scouting?". Here is his reply...

‘Scouting is a fantastic organisation to be involved in. The work it does with young people across the world providing them with the opportunity of adventure and developing new skills is something everybody should applaud.

Recently I witnessed some Scouts being taught how to light a fire for the first time on camp. I admit the flames made me a bit nervous, ever since that thing with the dragon I’ve had a bit of an aversion to fire, but it was great to see how excited and inspired the young people were by this new skill they’d learnt.’ (source:Scouts.org.uk)

We look forward to seeing all members of 3rd Ware tomorrow and gathering together at the end of the day to renew our promises along side the other Scout Groups from our District, learning who is to be awarded the Peter Geer trophy this year and then, just before heading home, taking our annual Group photograph, which gets bigger and bigger each year.

Please see your section emails for details or when and where to meet. Thank you.

River Lea learn about St.George

River Lea had a few new Beavers join them this week, so they started off making sure that everyone knew each other.

They then learned about St. George and the dragon, along with how they should be marching for the parade through the town on Sunday.

Three lucky Beavers were chosen to hold the colony's flag during the parade. The evening was finished with a few games.

Heron Cubs

On Monday, Herons got into the spirit of St. George's day.

After a game of St George and the Dragons, the Cubs learnt about St. George and exactly why he is the patron saint of both Scouting and England.

They also had a go designing their own shield and practiced parading in preparation for the Parade though Ware on Sunday.
